University Program Information

The University College Cork offers a micro-credential course in Neurodiversity: Embracing Creativity in the Music Classroom (MU6061).

Course Overview

This 12-week part-time course is designed for education professionals at all levels, including preschool, primary, secondary, and special needs assistants, as well as those working in the arts. The course aims to provide students with practical skills and toolkits to create a rich music environment in their classrooms that encourages children of all abilities to be active participants.

Course Structure

The course includes:

• 10 online lectures, each 1.5 hours long
• 2 in-person workshops, each 4 hours long, held in the Department of Music at UCC

Teaching Methods

The course features a blend of online lectures and interactive in-person workshops. The online lectures will be held on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 pm, while the in-person workshops will be held on Saturdays from 10:00 am-1:00 pm and 2:00-3:00 pm.

The course will be delivered by an interdisciplinary team of practitioners, including:

Course Objectives

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Illustrate a comprehensive understanding of neurodiversity and related terminologies
2. Demonstrate an understanding and reflect critically on current music pedagogies
3. Demonstrate an understanding of a neural-based education model
4. Identify practices that promote inclusion and scaffold development within learning
5. Show self-reliance on selecting, interpreting, preparing, and teaching appropriate music content for a neurodiverse setting
6. Gain knowledge of transferable therapeutic music skills to the classroom

Requirements

• Academic requirements: Leaving Cert or equivalent to a passing level
• Written requirement: 250-word statement of interest in neurodiversity and working in a creative art form
