Applied Software Engineering (BSc)

The Applied Software Engineering (BSc) program is a three-year, full-time degree that focuses on hands-on software development using current commercial tools and techniques. The program is designed to produce highly employable software engineers with the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience that graduate employers are looking for.

Program Structure

The program is structured as a full-time degree, taught over three years with two semesters per year. Formal teaching and group sessions will take place over three days per week, with two days per week left for group project work, self-directed learning, and accessing other University resources and support services.

Year One

In the first year, students learn to think like a programmer and begin to code in a professional manner. They work primarily with languages such as JavaScript, Java, and Python to design, develop, and deploy web applications according to the needs of customers. Students also start to develop their knowledge of relational and NoSQL database systems and learn how to use industry-standard tools following best practices to develop quality software.

Year Two

In the second year, students work on larger, more complex, and technically difficult projects. They expand their knowledge in areas such as performance and scalability, cyber security, and DevOps, and develop and deploy mobile-based applications according to the needs of customers.

Year Three

In the third year, students learn about user experience design and emerging trends and use these to develop a product with an appreciation of the latest languages, frameworks, and tools. They learn about managing change and adopting technology in organizations. The Large Team Project module allows students to collaborate with other team members to effectively manage a project to develop a high-quality software solution to meet the needs of clients.

Learning and Assessment

Entry Requirements

The program accepts a combination of A-levels and other qualifications, as well as equivalent international qualifications, subject to entry requirements. Typical offers are:

• ABB-BBC at A-level
• 32-30 overall or 665-655 in 3 HL subjects for International Baccalaureate
• DDM-DMM in a BTEC Extended Diploma in Computing, Engineering, ICT, or IT

English language requirements also apply, with accepted qualifications including GCSE English Language or Welsh language at grade C/4 or equivalent, IELTS (academic) with at least 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT with at least 90 overall, PTE Academic with at least 69 overall, and Trinity ISE II/III with at least two Distinctions and two Merits.
