Overview of the MSc in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism

The MSc in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is a comprehensive program designed to equip healthcare professionals with in-depth knowledge and skills in the management of endocrine disorders, diabetes, and metabolic conditions. The program consists of lectures, workshops, case studies, clinical attachments, research projects, and presentations.

Program Objectives

The program aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the scientific principles underlying the regulation of the endocrine system and maintenance of homeostasis, including energy metabolism. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

• Effectively use currently available diagnostic and assessment tools as well as therapeutic options in the management of diabetes, obesity, metabolic, and endocrine diseases.
• Apply the latest developments in precision medicine, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence in the prediction, prevention, classification, and personalized treatment of common and rare endocrine conditions.
• Understand the principles and practice of cognitive-psychological-behavioral management of people with or at risk of these chronic diseases.
• Implement evidence-guided, value-based, and person-centered interdisciplinary care with ongoing evaluation.

Course Details

MEDM5101 Diabetes Management and Education I

This module covers glucose homeostasis and diabetes, practical diabetes management, and interactive workshops on practical management.

MEDM5102 Diabetes Management and Education II

This module includes diabetes management in special situations, diabetic comorbidities, and interactive workshops on practical management.

MEDM6101 Diabetes Management and Education III

This module focuses on clinical attachment, interactive workshops on research methodologies and treatment with clinical practice, and translational research into clinical practice.

MEDM5201 General Endocrinology & Metabolism I

This module introduces endocrinology, covering the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, thyroid and bone disorders, and clinical attachment.

MEDM5202 General Endocrinology & Metabolism II

This module covers reproductive endocrinology, adrenal disorders, common lipid and uncommon childhood endocrine disorders, emerging issues and controversies, and interactive workshops on practical management.

MEDM6201 General Endocrinology & Metabolism III

This module includes interactive workshops on practical management, covering electrolytes and lipid disorders, and pediatric and reproductive endocrinology.

MEDM5301 Obesity & Weight Management

This module covers obesity from epidemiology to pathophysiology, management of obesity from theory to practice, and interactive case discussions.

MEDM6401 Graduation Project

A 5,000-word group project is required to be submitted by the end of the program.

Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

• A minimum attendance of 75% in each course
• Eight case scenario discussions (500-word per scenario)
• A 5,000-word dissertation on a diabetes-related topic
• A 5,000-word dissertation on an endocrine-related topic
• MCQ assessment at the end of courses MEDM5101, MEDM5201, MEDM5202, MEDM5301, and MEDM6401
• A 5,000-word group project by the end of the program

Admission Requirements

In addition to the entry requirements of the Graduate School, graduates from a recognized university with relevant degrees will be accepted. All applicants must fulfill the English Language Proficiency Requirement stipulated by the Graduate School before being considered for admission.

Exemption

Holders of the certificate of the Professional Diploma in either Diabetes Management and Education or General Endocrinology and Metabolism may be entitled to apply for exemption of certain courses within 3 years after graduation.
