Program Overview

The MSc in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is a one-year part-time program designed to update healthcare professionals and researchers on the diverse clinical presentations, current treatments, gaps in diagnosis and treatment, as well as emerging therapies in the field. Special emphasis is placed on conditions relevant to Asian populations.

Program Objectives

The program aims to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism, with a focus on recognizing the diverse clinical presentations, current treatments, and emerging therapies in the field.

Course Structure

The program consists of three modules:

• Module 1: Lectures (7 sessions), covering topics such as:
  • Overview of epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management of common endocrine disorders
  • Hypothalamus-pituitary axis
  • Thyroid and bone disorders
  • Reproductive endocrinology
  • Adrenal disorders
  • Common lipid and uncommon childhood endocrine disorders
  • Emerging issues and controversies
• Module 2: Interactive Workshops (5 sessions), focusing on:
  • Demonstration of the principles of diagnostic evaluation and management of common endocrine disorders using a multidisciplinary approach
  • Thyroid and bone disorders
  • Adrenal gland and reproductive endocrinology
  • Pituitary gland and reproductive endocrinology
  • Electrolytes and lipid disorders
  • Paediatric and reproductive endocrinology
• Module 3: Clinical Attachments (8 sessions), providing hands-on experience in:
  • Endocrine clinic
  • Endocrine case discussion
  • Endocrine in-patient grand round
  • Combined obesity clinic
  • Thyroid clinic
  • Combined pituitary clinic
  • Growth and endocrine clinic
  • Combined gynae-endocrine clinic

Teaching Faculty

The program is taught by a team of experienced faculty members with expertise in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.

Assessment

Candidates will be awarded the diploma qualification upon satisfactorily fulfilling the following requirements:

1. 75% attendance in each module
2. Passing a MCQ assessment
3. Passing 10 case studies on diagnosis and management of endocrinology and related diseases
4. Passing a 5000-word dissertation on an endocrinology-related topic

Admission Requirements

Applicants should be degree holders with relevant qualifications in their discipline and 2 years of continued experience in care and/or research related to diabetes, metabolism, and/or endocrinology. Two confidential recommendations are required for those who do not hold a university degree.

Exemption

Graduates of the Basic Course in General Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2022 and 2024 are eligible to apply for exemption of Module 1 with a lower program fee. Medical doctors who have taken clinical attachment for at least three months at an accredited training center for endocrinology with a written certification from the trainer are eligible to apply for exemption of EM3C1-EM3C5.

• Program fee for applicants who have applied exemption of Module 1 from Basic Course in General Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2022 and in 2024 would be at HKD53,030 and HKD52,030 respectively.
