Introduction to Civil and Structural Engineering BEng Honours

Course Overview

The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of civil and structural engineering principles, including design, construction, and management. The program is divided into three stages, each lasting one academic year, with a total of 120 credits to be completed by the end of each stage.

Stage 1

In Stage 1, students will gain a broad introduction to the principles of engineering, including engineering mathematics, electrical and magnetic systems, electronics and sensors, thermofluid mechanics, properties and behavior of engineering materials, mechanics, and introduction to programming languages. Students will also develop their professional skills through design-focused modules and site visits.

Stage 2

In Stage 2, students will delve further into key topics, including statistics and numerical methods for civil engineers, design of sustainable engineering systems, construction management, water treatment engineering, environmental systems and quantification, geotechnics, design of building elements, land traffic and highways, hydraulics, engineering surveying, and engineering mechanics.

Stage 3

In Stage 3, the program will integrate specialist areas of structural engineering, with modules such as introduction to architecture, design of sustainable engineering systems, engineering ethics and sustainability, the data-centric urban environment, individual project, foundation design, exploring the ground, design of building systems, structural mechanics, and spatial data engineering and BIM.
