Module Objective

The objective of this module is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply a wide range of psychosocial interventions in specialist mental health nursing practice, underpinned by the recovery ethos and the development of a therapeutic alliance.

The module covers the application of principles of structured psycho-social interventions, including:

• Motivational Interviewing
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
• Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
• Open Dialogue
• Family Therapy or Family-centred care

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the applicability of psychosocial interventions in specialist mental health nursing practice
• Critically evaluate the quality, safety, and effectiveness of psychosocial interventions
• Integrate the principles and practices of partnership and/or co-production into their work with service users and their families
• Apply the principles and processes of engaging service users experiencing mental distress
• Evaluate factors that may help or hinder recovery and reflect on their own specialist practice

Requirements

• Applicants must be practicing nurses with evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
• Applicants must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years if their main language is not English
• Qualifications obtained outside Ireland must meet the minimum academic and English language requirements
