Program Overview

The University of Strathclyde offers a BA Hons English and Creative Writing & Journalism, Media and Communication program. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of English literature, creative writing, and journalism, as well as the skills and practices of contemporary journalism in a digital, multimedia era.

Program Structure

The program is a four-year course that allows students to study English and Creative Writing and Journalism, Media and Communication. In the first year, students take core classes in English and Creative Writing, as well as Introduction to News and Features and Introduction to Journalism, Media and Communication. In the second year, students take core classes in Writing Through Time and News Reporting and Writing, as well as optional classes in Digital Media, Features Writing, and Journalism, Media and Communication: Theories and Methods.

Year 3 and 4

In the third and fourth years, students can choose from a variety of optional classes, including Writing Short Fiction and Poetry, Dramatic Writing, The American Novel, Victorian Literature, and Twentieth Century Literature. Students can also choose to take a work-based learning class or a dissertation in Journalism, Media and Communication.

Entry Requirements

The standard entry requirements for the program are AAAA at Higher level, including English and at least one other social science subject, plus National 5 Maths or Application of Maths at B to C. The minimum entry requirements are AABB at Higher level, including English at B, plus National 5 Maths or Application of Maths at C.

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the program are £1,820 for Scottish undergraduate students, £9,535 for students from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and £21,550 for international students. Students from Scotland may be eligible for a bursary and loan to help cover living costs while at university.

• For students commencing study in 2024/25, this is capped at £27,750 (with the exception of the MPharm and integrated Masters programmes), MPharm students pay £9,250 for each of the four years.
Students studying on integrated Masters degree programmes pay an additional £9,250 for the Masters year with the exception of those undertaking a full-year industrial placement where a separate placement fee will apply.
