Program Overview

The University of Strathclyde offers a BA Hons English and Creative Writing & Human Resource Management program. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of English literature and creative writing, as well as the principles of human resource management.

Program Structure

The program is a four-year course that allows students to study English and Creative Writing and Human Resource Management. The first year provides an introduction to literary studies, reading novels, plays, short stories, and poetry, including contemporary and older texts. The second year focuses on literary history, and the third year offers a range of options, including classes on Renaissance, Victorian, Twentieth Century, and American literature.

English and Creative Writing

The English and Creative Writing component of the program covers a wide range of topics, including:

• Year 1: Introduction to literary studies, reading novels, plays, short stories, and poetry
• Year 2: Literary history, with option classes focusing on Scottish literature and the literature of humans and animals
• Year 3: Creative writing classes, including drama and fiction, and option classes on Renaissance, Victorian, Twentieth Century, and American literature
• Year 4: Specialized classes in creative writing, including the opportunity to write a short creative writing dissertation

Human Resource Management

The Human Resource Management component of the program covers a range of topics, including:

• Year 1: Introduction to HRM, including the study of HRM processes and the employment relationship
• Year 2: HRM processes, including recruitment and selection, teams and groups, and employee commitment and engagement
• Year 3: The employment relationship and behavior at work, including power and authority, interests, and conflict
• Year 4: Specialist classes in HRM, including work, employment, and society, and employment relations

Learning and Teaching

The program uses a range of teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, and seminars. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in team-based projects and make use of online teaching materials.

Assessment

Assessment methods include a mixture of essays, exams, and coursework. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a dissertation in their final year.

Entry Requirements

The standard entry requirements for the program are:

• Highers: AAAA (first sitting) or AAAAB (second sitting)
• A Levels: ABB-BBB
• International Baccalaureate: 32-30
• Irish Leaving Certificate: Two H2 passes and three H3 passes, including English

The tuition fees for the program are:

• Scotland: £1,820
• England, Wales, and Northern Ireland: To be confirmed
• International: £21,550

Graduates from the program have gone on to have success in a wide range of careers, including publishing, the civil service, management, marketing, journalism, creative writing, administration, and teaching. Facilities

The University of Strathclyde has a range of facilities, including the Andersonian Library, which has around a million print volumes and access to one million electronic books and over 105,000 e-journals. The library also has over 550 networked computers and extensive Wi-Fi zones for laptops and tablets. The University also has a range of other facilities, including cafés, meeting areas, and exhibition spaces.

• Year 1
• An introduction to literary studies, reading novels, plays, short stories, and poetry, including contemporary and older texts.
Classes also introduce techniques in creative writing.
• Core classes focus on literary history.
Option classes focus on Scottish literature, and on the literature of humans and animals.
• Year 3
• There are two creative writing classes in year 3, currently on drama and on fiction.
In addition to these, you can choose from options which currently include classes on Renaissance, Victorian, Twentieth Century and American literature, among others including an optional work placement.
• Year 4
• You can choose to write a short creative writing dissertation, consisting of a creative piece (fiction, poetry, drama, etc) and a critical commentary.
In addition, there are specialized classes in creative writing.

Scotland 2024/25: TBC 2022/23: £1,820 Fees for students who meet the relevant residence requirements in Scotland are subject to confirmation by the Scottish Funding Council. England, Wales & Northern Ireland£9,250 Assuming no change in fees policy over the period, the total amount payable by undergraduate students will be capped. For students commencing study in 2024/25, this is capped at £27,750 (with the exception of the MPharm and integrated Masters programmes), MPharm students pay £9,250 for each of the four years. Students studying on integrated Masters degree programmes pay an additional £9,250 for the Masters year with the exception of those undertaking a full-year industrial placement where a separate placement fee will apply. Human Resource Management Course materials & Costs Students are encouraged to purchase the core textbook for each HRM module but copies are also available in the University library.
