Management (MiM)

The Master in Management degree (MiM) provides in-depth training and development in the key areas of technology, innovation, operations management, and data analytics. Designed through a partnership between industry and academia, the degree addresses the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing organizations in all industries. The MiM engages students in reflections on how the interplay of these topics affects contemporary workplaces and can be managed.

Program Overview

The MiM degree attracts career-driven individuals with an undergraduate degree and work experience who are seeking additional management credentials. The program welcomes individuals from a variety of disciplines, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and the building of a broader personal network. This course-based program offers flexibility, incorporating interactive asynchronous online courses along with face-to-face interactions. The expected duration for completion is 1 year for full-time students and 2 years for part-time students, with a maximum timeframe of 5 years allowed.

The MiM degree includes two specializations:

1. Technology, Innovation and Operations Management (TIO)
2. Data Analytics (DA)

Both specializations commence and conclude with two-week intensive bootcamps conducted in person. TIO students complete six online courses, with the option to take two in-person, while DA students undertake four in-person courses and two online.

International Students

To qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), international students must complete more than 50% of their courses in person and maintain full-time student status. Sufficient courses are available in both specializations to meet this requirement.

• Leadership and Innovation: This course introduces students to the complexities of managing an organization during periods of change, emphasizing the development of a sustainable innovative organization by enhancing human capital for transformative results.
• Business Strategy: This course familiarizes students with the tools for assessing strategy and strategic management processes from a senior management perspective, utilizing cases, exercises, discussions, and simulations.
• Descriptive Analytics: This course provides an overview of various analytical processes, covering topics such as big data, data visualization, descriptive data collection, random variables, and probability theories, with an emphasis on experiential learning through case analyses and hands-on experiences.

Admission Requirements

The general admission requirement includes a four-year degree in business or a related field, with a minimum acceptable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a 4.5 scale, which is equivalent to a "B" on a letter grade scale. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will assess degrees earned outside of Canada for equivalency. Applicants must also demonstrate leadership or relevant professional experience, typically a minimum of two years. For applicants whose first language is not English, the University's English Language Requirements must be satisfied.

Applications from individuals possessing non-business degrees, three-year degrees, or professional designations, alongside extensive professional experience in a leadership capacity, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In the DA specialization, applicants must demonstrate quantitative skills acquired through studies in disciplines such as engineering, economics, statistics, finance, or mathematics. Pre-qualifying courses may also be necessary.

Application Process

1. Complete the online application form.
2. Submit the following additional materials:
   • Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended; unofficial transcripts are acceptable for initial assessment.
   • Contact information for two individuals who can provide letters of recommendation regarding the applicant's academic work.
   • English language requirement scores, when applicable; copies of test scores are acceptable for initial assessment.
   • An academic writing sample (e.g., an essay from a course with instructor comments, written in English).
   • A CV/resumé and any other relevant supporting documents (e.g., scanned copies of name change or proof of permanent residency).

Start Date: Both streams of the MiM program commence in August of each year, with only one intake annually. Applications for the August 2026 cohort will be accepted from November 1, 2025, to February 1, 2026. The application must be submitted by February 1, with supporting documents to be sent by mid-February. Given the competitive nature of the program, early submission of a complete application package is recommended.

International applicants who receive an offer of admission must pay a deposit to secure their seat at the University. They will also be required to demonstrate financial capability for tuition and living expenses during the visa application process. It is advisable for students to consider these financial implications prior to applying and to start the visa process early enough to achieve approval by mid-August.

UWinnipeg offers undergraduate and graduate programs across six faculties:

Across these faculties, UWinnipeg offers over 40 undergraduate programs in a variety of three-year, four-year and Honours Bachelor's degree formats. Several programs are unique in Western Canada, including the Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights and the Master's in Development Practice with a focus on Indigenous Development. In 2025, UWinnipeg launched its first doctoral program, the PhD in Bioscience and Policy, marking a new milestone in the university's research trajectory.

History

UWinnipeg's roots extend back to 1871, when Wesley College was founded, followed by Manitoba College. The two colleges merged in 1938 to form United College, which became the University of Winnipeg in 1967. This heritage gives UWinnipeg more than 150 years of continuous operation as an institution of higher learning in Manitoba, rooted from its earliest years in the liberal arts tradition and a commitment to serving the Winnipeg community.

The UW Collegiate

Uniquely among Canadian universities, UWinnipeg operates its own high school on campus: The UW Collegiate, offering Grade 9 through 12 programs to secondary students in an environment of academic freedom, mutual trust and critical thinking. The Collegiate's philosophy emphasises the development of mature, self-directed individuals and provides a direct transition pathway into post-secondary education at the University of Winnipeg. The Collegiate is led by its own Dean and maintains its own distinct academic mission within the broader university community.

Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (PACE)

UWinnipeg's PACE division delivers industry-aligned certificates and diplomas for working professionals, career changers and lifelong learners, with more than 600 full-time and part-time programs, courses and seminars available across business, computing, health, education and other fields. PACE is located in the Buhler Centre and has been serving the professional learning needs of Manitoba since 1972. It includes formal transfer pathways allowing PACE graduates to continue into undergraduate degree programs at the university.

Research

UWinnipeg is a research-active institution that excels in innovative scholarship of discovery and integration. Research priorities include Indigenous studies, the biosciences, environmental science, and the social sciences, with faculty engaged in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiry. The university is committed to knowledge mobilisation: moving research out of the academy and into the community through collaborative partnerships and applied projects. The 2025 launch of the PhD in Bioscience and Policy signals a significant expansion of UWinnipeg's formal research capacity at the doctoral level.
