Pre-Social Work Program

Overview

Social work is a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups, and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. Social workers are primarily employed in health service agencies and government administration, with opportunities in hospitals and the education system.

Your Education

Year 1: Pre-Social Work at The University of Winnipeg

• The University of Winnipeg is a key institution for fulfilling the entrance requirements for social work programs at various Canadian universities. It's essential to note that each faculty of social work has its own unique entrance requirements.

Years 2-4: Professional Studies in Social Work

• During the first year, students will be required to apply for admission to social work at another university.
• Enrollment in social work programs is limited and often competitive, necessitating at least three more years of study to complete a social work program.

Pre-Professional Requirements

University of Manitoba

To meet the entrance requirements of the Bachelor of Social Work program at the University of Manitoba (Fort Garry Campus), students must complete:

• 30 credit hours of study
• A minimum Adjusted Grade Point Average (AGPA) of 2.5 (C+) or higher. Starting from the Fall 2026 admission intake, all 30 credit hours must be from the pre-requisite courses with a minimum grade of C.

The following courses from the University of Winnipeg satisfy the University of Manitoba's entrance requirements for Social Work (Fort Garry Campus):

• Women and Gender Studies WGS-1232(6) (Note: 3 of the 6 credit hours can count towards either elective requirement)

Canadian Mennonite University

To meet the entrance requirements of the Bachelor of Social Work program at Canadian Mennonite University, students must complete:

• 27 credit hours of study
• An AGPA of 2.5 (C+) or higher and a grade of C or higher in all courses.

The following courses from the University of Winnipeg satisfy Canadian Mennonite University's requirements for Social Work:

• Psychology PSYC-1000(6)
• Indigenous Studies: IS-1016(3) or IS-1017(3)
• Electives: 18 credit hours

Additional Note: Canadian Mennonite University offers a SWRK-1000 Introduction to Social Work section in the Winter term (online synchronous, Tuesdays 6:00-8:45), which is not required for application but would be beneficial. This option is available to University of Winnipeg students via Letter of Permission.

Additional Information

Students have the option to apply to various social work schools in Canada as well as institutions in the United States or abroad. It is advisable for students to consult with the school they plan to attend to ensure they select an appropriate set of courses and meet the entrance requirements for their chosen Social Work program.

Faculties and academic structure

UWinnipeg offers undergraduate and graduate programs across six faculties:

Across these faculties, UWinnipeg offers over 40 undergraduate programs in a variety of three-year, four-year and Honours Bachelor's degree formats. In 2025, UWinnipeg launched its first doctoral program, the PhD in Bioscience and Policy, marking a new milestone in the university's research trajectory.

History

UWinnipeg's roots extend back to 1871, when Wesley College was founded, followed by Manitoba College. The two colleges merged in 1938 to form United College, which became the University of Winnipeg in 1967. This heritage gives UWinnipeg more than 150 years of continuous operation as an institution of higher learning in Manitoba, rooted from its earliest years in the liberal arts tradition and a commitment to serving the Winnipeg community.

The UW Collegiate

Uniquely among Canadian universities, UWinnipeg operates its own high school on campus: The UW Collegiate, offering Grade 9 through 12 programs to secondary students in an environment of academic freedom, mutual trust and critical thinking. The Collegiate's philosophy emphasises the development of mature, self-directed individuals and provides a direct transition pathway into post-secondary education at the University of Winnipeg. The Collegiate is led by its own Dean and maintains its own distinct academic mission within the broader university community.

Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (PACE)

UWinnipeg's PACE division delivers industry-aligned certificates and diplomas for working professionals, career changers and lifelong learners, with more than 600 full-time and part-time programs, courses and seminars available across business, computing, health, education and other fields. PACE is located in the Buhler Centre and has been serving the professional learning needs of Manitoba since 1972. It includes formal transfer pathways allowing PACE graduates to continue into undergraduate degree programs at the university.

Research

UWinnipeg is a research-active institution that excels in innovative scholarship of discovery and integration. Research priorities include Indigenous studies, the biosciences, environmental science, and the social sciences, with faculty engaged in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiry. The university is committed to knowledge mobilisation: moving research out of the academy and into the community through collaborative partnerships and applied projects. The 2025 launch of the PhD in Bioscience and Policy signals a significant expansion of UWinnipeg's formal research capacity at the doctoral level.
