Program Overview

The LIS 512 Internship in Library and Information Science is a robust internship experience designed for Simmons School of Library and Information Science students. The program focuses on teen services and is offered in collaboration with the Boston Public Library.

Description

The internship exposes students to various facets of the public library, with a specific focus on teen services. Students will observe and participate in the daily activities of the Teen Central and five teen-serviced branches in the Boston Public Library system, including East Boston, Grove Hall, Hyde Park, Mattapan, and Roxbury. The program also involves individual work focusing on the inner workings of a public library and culminates in a research paper on the experience.

Requirements

• Prerequisite: 18 credit hours, including all core requirements.
• Length of time: 14 weeks for the semester, 9 hours a week, for a total of 130 hours.
• Schedule: Friday meetings at 2:00 pm and 8 hours of virtual and in-person work.
• Capacity: Two interns per semester.
• Credit: 3 units.

Students will work under the supervision of professional librarians and engage in discussions with key personnel in the organization. The program is open to current Simmons SLIS MLIS students.
