Medical Exemptions for Orthoptists (ORTH408/ORTH4080)

The aim of this module is to provide orthoptists with the fundamental knowledge and required competencies to use medicines under exemptions within the scope of orthoptic practice.

Who is the Module For?

The module is designed for practising orthoptists and is a standalone option which can be used to support continuous professional development.

Module Details and Indicative Content

Learners will be given the tools to demonstrate the safe use of medicines through accurate patient examination, medical history, and the administration of medicines within the scope of orthoptic practice. They will be taught to describe and explain the fundamental principles of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics as well as their application to disease management within the scope of orthoptic practice. In addition, professionals will learn to accurately calculate drug dosages and identify potential medication errors within the scope of orthoptic practice. Furthermore, they will develop the skills necessary to competently demonstrate application of infection control and awareness of microbial resistance. Finally, learners will examine the legal context, ethical issues, and policy guidance concerning medicines and the distinction between exemptions and other prescribing mechanisms.

How You Are Assessed

There are three summative assessments:

• A practical in the form of a work-based competency assessment
• A written examination focused on drug calculations
• A case assignment portfolio
