Programme Overview

The Foundational Approaches to Learning and Teaching in Higher Education programme is a 10-week online short course designed for individuals with limited experience in teaching and learning. The programme aims to introduce participants to the theory and methods of teaching, planning, and designing learning activities, as well as inclusive practice, effective communication, and supportive learning.

Programme Structure

The programme consists of a standalone module that covers the following topics:

• Introduction to the theory and practice of teaching and supporting learning in higher education in a global context
• Planning inclusive, accessible learning activities
• Creating lesson plans
• Micro-teaching
• Giving and receiving feedback about teaching and supporting learning in higher education
• Introduction to the use of reflective practice and evidence-based approaches to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and supporting learning in higher education
• Introduction to the use of appropriate questioning techniques to engage students in a global context
• Introduction to the benefits of continual professional development to enhance practice

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the programme, participants must provide evidence of English language ability equivalent to an IELTS (academic) score of 6.5. Those without an IELTS or equivalent certificate can take a free online English test to assess their proficiency. Nationals of or individuals who have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in certain countries are exempt from proving their English ability.

Fees and Funding

The programme fee for the academic year 2025/26 is ｣1,447, which is fully inclusive of all costs, including teaching materials, core textbooks, assessments, and resits.

Teaching and Assessment

The programme is delivered through a specially designed online learning platform, which provides 24/7 access to study materials, including:

• Innovative lecturecasts consisting of audio recordings, infographics, videos, animation, short tasks, and written content
• A comprehensive eLibrary of ebooks and academic journals
• Forums for discussing programme content with peers
• Support from academic staff and a dedicated Student Support team Assessments are based on work carried out in the virtual classroom and may include report writing, reflective practice, research projects, and individual or group presentations.

Online Learning Experience

The programme is designed to provide a high-quality online learning experience, with directed and self-directed learning activities, including participation in virtual discussions, working through specially prepared videos and lecturecasts, and completing interactive exercises on the learning platform.

Study Duration and Commitment

The programme has an approximate study duration of 10 weeks, studied online and part-time, requiring a minimum of 15-20 hours of study per week.

The programme is delivered by experienced subject specialists with demonstrated learning and teaching proficiency, who provide a high level of support throughout the programme. Academic staff are honorary faculty at the University of Liverpool, and participants also have access to a dedicated Student Support team.
