NPQLPM: National Professional Qualification for Leading Primary Mathematics

The National Professional Qualification for Leading Primary Mathematics (NPQLPM) is a program designed for teachers who have or aspire to have responsibility for leading mathematics in a primary setting.

About the Programme

The UCL Centre for Educational Leadership looks forward to working with participants on their newly designed NPQ, supporting them to deepen their knowledge of leading primary mathematics within a collaborative and open learning environment. The program is based on the latest research evidence for effective mathematics pedagogy and will enable participants to develop their knowledge and skills and put them into practice in their school context.

Participants will learn how to:

• Develop a culture of mathematics across their primary setting
• Support teachers at all levels in their school to develop their knowledge and classroom skills in teaching primary mathematics
• Contribute to a school culture in which pupils can thrive and succeed and have a positive attitude towards mathematics
• Develop pupils' interconnected understanding of concepts, procedural fluency, and automaticity in key number facts
• Implement change successfully within their context by understanding the stages of implementation and applying them with the support of facilitators and colleagues

This course is for:

• Teachers and leaders with responsibility for leading mathematics across a primary key-stage or school, or those who want to have this responsibility
• Teachers familiar with mastery approaches to teaching primary mathematics, who want to improve leadership skills in this area
• Subject leaders in a school already engaged in the primary Teaching for Mastery programme or similar program

How Long Will It Take?

The program will take 12 months, followed by an 8-day open-book summative case study task.

When Will It Start and How Much Will It Cost?

The program will start in November 2025. The program fee is Ł885 (+VAT) for participants and schools in England who are required to self-fund.

Programme Route Map

The program consists of three modules, each lasting four months, with a final assessment preparation period. The modules include self-directed study, facilitated activities, and peer learning groups.

Module 1

• Self-directed study: 8 hours
• Peer learning group: 3 hours
• Formative assessment tasks: 1 hour
• NPQ mentor check-in: 1 hour

Module 2

• Self-directed study: 8 hours
• Peer learning group: 3 hours
• Formative assessment tasks: 1 hour
• NPQ mentor check-in: 1 hour

Module 3

• Self-directed study: 8 hours
• Peer learning group: 3 hours
• Formative assessment tasks: 1 hour
• Consolidation conference: 5 hours

Final Assessment Preparation

Participants will need to ensure 90% engagement and access to the assessment platform. The final summative assessment will be an 8-day open-book case study task.

Implementation Project

The implementation project will run over 12 months, with participants working on a work-based reflective learning project that integrates research with practice and is aligned to the EEF process model for school improvement.
