Program Overview
Introduction to Computational Cell Biophysics MRes
The Computational Cell Biophysics MRes is a research master's program designed to bridge existing scientific disciplines, from biology to physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and AI. This program enables students to create and use tools and techniques based on core concepts in biology, physical sciences, computer science, and AI, working alongside leading senior investigators to accelerate understanding of complex biological systems and processes.
Program Overview
The program is ideal for graduates from a life sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, or engineering background looking to become interdisciplinary science researchers. It provides students with the biological, computational, and analytical research expertise needed for doctoral study in biological science or a research-related role in various industries.
Key Features
- Full-time study mode
- Duration: 1 calendar year
- Program starts: September
- Tuition fees (2026/27): 」21,500 for UK students, 」42,700 for international students
Entry Requirements
A minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard is required. English language requirements are also necessary, with the English language level for this course being Level 4.
Equivalent Qualifications
Country-specific information and equivalent qualifications can be obtained from the International Students website. International applicants can find out the equivalent qualification for their country by selecting from a list of countries.
Course Overview
The program includes a 120-credit MRes Laboratory-Based Research Project in Biophysics, which is integral to the MRes. Each project is co-supervised by two scientists, one from physical sciences and one from biological sciences. Students attend laboratory meetings for both research groups throughout the program, increasing their exposure to different research environments and groups of scientists.
Modules and Assessments
Students take three compulsory and two optional modules, which run for ten weeks and typically have four hours of time in lectures/workshops per week, with a further six hours of independent study. The compulsory modules include:
- MRes Laboratory-Based Research Project in Biophysics
- Research Techniques in Cell Biology and Biophysics
- Computational Cell Biophysics
Optional modules are available from the Division of Biosciences, including:
- Advanced Molecular Cell Biology
- Tissue Biology
- Interdisciplinary Cell Biology
- Advanced Practical Cell Biology
- Cell Signalling in Health and Disease
Assessments are varied and include:
- A mini-grant application describing the research project
- A project write-up in the format of a research paper
- An assessed laboratory meeting within the MRes host laboratory
- Oral presentations for Computational Cell Biophysics
- A 'News & Views' type article on a research seminar
- A critical and comparative review of a research technique in Biophysics
- An authoritative, comprehensive, and systematic review in the form of a 'Current Opinion' in Cell Biology article
- Online coding exercises
- Data analysis exercises
- Website design
Careers and Employability
As a graduate of this program, students will be able to lead complex and challenging research projects and implement quantitative problem-solving approaches. They will have a broad understanding of tools and techniques spanning several intersecting scientific fields and the ability to communicate at an advanced level with specialists from various disciplines.
Networking Opportunities
Students will have regular opportunities to connect, collaborate, and build professional contacts as part of their master's. They can participate in careers events through UCL Careers during the academic year and enhance their CV writing and interview skills. Academic connections can be nurtured through department and faculty events, including PhD student-led Knowledge Exchange Workshops.
Teaching and Learning
The program employs a wide variety of teaching and learning methods to suit a diverse student intake, including:
- Lectures from world-renowned interdisciplinary scientists
- Online exercises to support and extend students' understanding of topics
- Presentation and feedback sessions to train students in teamwork, communication, and presentation skills
- Workshops and tutorials with small student numbers to ensure individual attention and support
- Facility visits and expert-led tours of state-of-the-art research facilities
- Research department seminars to expose students to ongoing, current scientific research
Fees and Funding
Fees for this course are 」21,500 for UK students and 」42,700 for international students for the 2026/27 academic year. Additional costs, such as the cost of a monthly 18+ Oyster travel card for zones 1-2, are estimated to be 」119.90. Funding opportunities are available, and students can visit the Scholarships and Funding website for more information.
Accessibility
The department will endeavor to make reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities. Details of the accessibility of UCL buildings can be obtained from AccessAble, and further information can be obtained from the UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services team.
Conclusion
The Computational Cell Biophysics MRes at UCL offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in interdisciplinary research, bridging the gap between biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and AI. With its comprehensive curriculum, diverse teaching methods, and emphasis on research and employability, this program is ideal for those looking to pursue a career in scientific research or related fields.
