French and Romanian BA

The French and Romanian BA program at University College London (UCL) offers students the opportunity to achieve near-native French language skills and gain insights into the culture, history, and geography of regions where the language is spoken. By learning Romanian, students can open doors to future careers in countries and companies across the world.


Program Overview

The program is taught across two departments: the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS). It offers a wide range of modules, including literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, film, and other aspects of the cultures associated with the languages being learned.

The program is available in full-time mode and typically lasts for four academic years.

Program Structure

In each year of study, students take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken.


Year Abroad

The third year is spent abroad, split between two countries where the target languages are spoken. Students can participate in a study placement with one of UCL's partner universities, undertake a work placement, or a British Council language assistantship abroad.


Assessment

Modules are assessed by a mixture of written and oral examinations, essays, and other forms of coursework.

Entry Requirements

  • A levels: AAB, with French required at A level
  • GCSEs: English Language at grade B or 6 and Mathematics at grade C or 4
  • IB Diploma: 36 points, with a total of 17 points in three higher-level subjects, including French grade 6
  • Contextual offer: ABB, with French required, and 34 points in the IB Diploma

Additional Costs

There are no program-specific costs apart from those associated with study abroad. Studying abroad may cost between 」200」1,000 per month, depending on the location.

UCL’s partner GP surgery is located just a few streets from our main campus. Many students living in north and central London will fall within its catchment area and will be able to register with them. Registration involves a simple online form followed by an in-person appointment at the surgery.
