Master of Public Health (MPH)

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a postgraduate degree that provides students with a critical understanding of the key fundamentals underpinning global public health. The program covers a diverse range of topics, including the demands facing public health on a global scale, techniques for assessing population health needs, contemporary strategies that support health promotion, principles of epidemiology from public health perspectives, and theory and practice of personal development skills relevant to healthcare.

Course Structure

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 180 credits.

• Component 01: Compulsory - Global Public Health (20 credits)
• Component 02: Compulsory - Healthcare Leadership in Practice (20 credits)
• Component 03: Compulsory - Health Promotion (20 credits)

Learning and Assessments

Studying online gives students the freedom to study when and where it suits them. The courses are delivered through a virtual learning environment (VLE) instead of a traditional campus. This means students have access to their study materials 24/7, including:

• Multimedia lecturecasts made up of written content, short videos, animation, audio recordings, infographics, short tests, and mini-assignments
• Discussion forums for students to chat about the course content with fellow students
• Live seminars and Q&A sessions with tutors
• A comprehensive eLibrary of textbooks and academic journals
• Support from academic staff and a dedicated Student Support team

Assessments

Students will be assessed through a series of assignments, which can include:

• Engaging in discussion forums throughout modules
• Completing reflective journal entries
• Delivering live presentations
• Submitting longer written pieces

Online Learning Experience

The learning experience will be fully supported by high-quality learning materials and resources, delivered via a state-of-the-art virtual learning environment (VLE). On average, the learning experience will include:

• Directed learning (40%) - participating in tutor-led discussions and seminars, completing interactive exercises on the VLE, and watching videos and lecturecasts
• Self-directed learning (30%) - undertaking wider reading and research in the area of study to develop understanding of the subject area
• Assessment (30%) - time spent preparing and completing assignments and activities that contribute towards overall assessment

Study Duration

The MPH has an indicative study duration of 2 years, which is a guide to how long the course will take to complete. The actual duration may be longer or shorter depending on the speed of study, study options chosen, and module availability.

Entry Requirements

There are two different entry routes, taking into account prior work experience and relevant qualifications. Students will also need to meet English language requirements. Additionally, students will need to pass their first assignment set within the two-week induction period of the course to continue with their studies.

Academic Entry Route

To satisfy the academic entry route requirements, students must have:

• An undergraduate degree from an approved institution, equivalent to a UK Honours degree, or a relevant professional qualification

Work Experience Entry Route

To satisfy the work experience entry route requirements, students must have:

• At least three years' relevant work experience

English Language Requirements

As courses are delivered in English, a high proficiency with English is required. If English is not the first language, English ability should be equivalent to an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5.

Fees and Funding

The full tuition fee is £12,858 for UK students and £13,427 for international students. There are various payment options and discounts available, including a simple monthly payment plan, a full payment discount of 5% if paid upfront, and a 10% course scholarship for certain intakes.

Graduation

On successful completion of the degree, students will be invited to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Essex's Colchester campus.
